Questions about private doctor's letters

The letter

Is this an NHS sick note or fit note?

No. It is a private doctor's letter, sometimes searched for as a sick note or medical letter. It is not issued by the NHS or a GP surgery, and it is not a GP appointment.

What does the letter state?

A UK GMC-registered doctor reviewed your request, and the reviewing doctor signs it. Sick leave letters state the dates the doctor considers appropriate. Whoever receives it can check it at drsick.co.uk/verify (opens Dr Sick's website).

Who reviews my answers?

A fully qualified, UK-trained, GMC-registered doctor. They review your answers the same day and decide whether a letter can be issued.

Which letters do you issue?

Work

Will my employer accept a private doctor's letter?

Employers set their own evidence rules. Some accept a signed letter from a registered doctor; others ask for an NHS fit note. Check your sickness policy or ask your manager before you order.

When does my employer need evidence?

Employees can usually self-certify for the first 7 days. From day 8, your employer can ask for medical evidence. One sick leave letter covers up to 6 weeks; for longer, see your GP.

Can the letter cover adjusted duties or a phased return?

There is a separate letter for that: Adjustments to Work Duties. Choose it in the form. The doctor decides whether a letter can be issued, and your employer decides how to act on it.

Study

Will my university or college accept a private doctor's letter?

Each institution sets its own evidence rules. Some accept a signed letter from a GMC-registered doctor; others ask for a specific form or other evidence. Check your guidance or ask student support before you order.

Can I use it for an extension or mitigating circumstances?

Yes, as evidence with your request, if the doctor issues a letter. Most universities ask for evidence and set their own deadlines. The panel or your university decides the outcome.

Can I use it for a placement or apprenticeship?

Yes. Send it to your placement or training provider, and to your university or employer if they ask. Each decides whether to accept it.

Travel and fit to fly

Will my insurer or travel company accept the travel letter?

Each sets its own evidence rules. The Travel and Holiday Cancellation letter is for a cancelled trip or holiday, and your insurer or travel company decides whether to accept it. Check its rules before you order.

How recent does a fit to fly letter need to be?

Airlines usually only accept letters dated within 14 days of the outbound flight. Your airline decides whether to accept the letter. Check its rule and leave time for delivery.

Can I get a fit to fly letter at any stage of pregnancy?

No. Pregnancy Fit to Fly can't be issued at 36+ weeks pregnant on the flight date. The doctor decides whether a letter can be issued.

Ordering and delivery

How long does the questionnaire take?

A few minutes. You choose your letter and delivery speed, answer the medical questions and pay, all in one form. Answer fully and honestly, because the doctor relies on your answers.

How fast will I get my letter?

It depends on the speed you choose, from 72 hours to 2-hour urgent, and times are estimates. Same day orders must be submitted by 6pm; urgent orders are taken from 6am to 10pm. A faster speed doesn't change the doctor's decision.

What happens after I pay?

You'll see Dr Sick's confirmation page. A doctor reviews your answers the same day and decides whether a letter can be issued. If approved, the signed letter is sent by email and SMS; add doctor@drsick.co.uk to your contacts.

How does the Express Subscription work?

It costs £29.99 a month and covers up to 2 same-day letters a month, with a 3-month minimum term. Our terms apply, and details are sent by email after payment. For cancellation questions, contact us.

Refunds and safety

What if the doctor can't issue a letter?

The doctor reviews your answers and may decline. If no letter is issued, you get a full refund to your original payment method within 3 to 5 working days.

Who is this service not for?

It is not for emergencies (call 999) or urgent medical help (call NHS 111). It is not for absences over 6 weeks (see your GP) or anyone under 18.
